Our History

Irwin Mitchell was founded in 1912 in Sheffield by Walter Irwin Mitchell, with a focus on criminal law. By the 1980s, we had worked on some of the UK’s most high-profile personal injury cases, including the Zeebrugge ferry disaster, the Marchioness riverboat disaster, the British Airtours Boeing 737 disaster at Manchester Airport, the Kegworth Air Crash, and the Lockerbie Pan-Am flight terrorist bombing.

As our reputation grew, we expanded our reach. In 1989, we opened our second office in Birmingham, and throughout the 1990s, we underwent a series of mergers and acquisitions while opening offices in Leeds and London. By 2007, we had expanded to Newcastle, Manchester, and Glasgow. Our expansion continued in the 2010s in the South of England. Today, Irwin Mitchell is the largest full-service law firm in the UK, with leading private client and business legal departments. We also have a highly-respected wealth management service, having helped thousands of clients manage large compensation settlements. We are consistently ranked as one of the country’s top legal firms by independent legal directories and have won numerous awards for the quality of our work. In 2019, we were awarded Superbrand status for the first time, alongside international heavyweights such as British Airways, eBay, and LEGO.
