Boys & Maughan:
Professional Help...When It"s Needed!
Boys & Maughan has provided top-notch advice and built long-term client relationships for over 200 years.
Let"s dive into our history! Many people inquire about our headquarters, India House, located at Hawley Street, Margate, which was built in the Victorian era and is a Grade II* listed building. If you"re a researcher or just curious about India House, feel free to email Ian Priston. For more information about India House"s renowned Victorian resident, Phyllis Broughton, click here.
John Boys was the first solicitor from the firm, dating back to 1803. He was admitted as a solicitor in the Trinity term of 1803 and practised in partnership with Jacob Sawkins from 1803-05. After that, he practised alone until 1837, when John Harvey Boys joined him.
John Boys was a Justice of the Peace for the County of Kent for a considerable period and passed away in Margate on January 13, 1861, at the age of 79. John Harvey Boys also practised in Margate until his death on May 29, 1870, at the age of 55. Toke Harvey Boys, John Harvey Boys" son, was admitted in the Michaelmas term of 1870. After his admission, he joined the Boys and Boys firm until 1874, when he started practising independently.
Boys and Maughan came into existence in 1902, when Toke Harvey Boys joined forces with C.E. Maughan. Toke Harvey Boys passed away on February 12, 1916, at the age of 72. Mr. Cyril Collingwood Maughan of Margate succeeded him, and his photo is displayed in one of our offices alongside a portrait of Toke Harvey Boys. Mr. Collingwood was also Clerk to the Justices for the Petty Sessional Division of Margate, which met in the Old Town Hall until 1972. J.S.C. (Jack) Maughan, the last solicitor in his line, passed away in 1970. The early 19th-century Thanet map on display on the lower staircase at India House is signed on the back by John Harvey Boys and by "Thomas Snooks, his Clerk." The crayon lines on the map seem to represent the path of the new railways.
