Do you need a Visa to come to the UK?

When visiting the UK it is essential that you check to see if you have all your paperwork in order, you can be refused entry as the UK has strict immigration laws.

Who does not need a visa?

It may be easier to say who does not need a Visa, if you do not fall into one of these categories than you probably do need a visa

- European Union Citizen

- Citizen of the European Economic Area
• Liechtenstein
• Norway
• Iceland

- Switzerland

- A member of the Overseas Countries and Territories
If you are unsure then check with the Home office.

What about Non – visa nationals?

OK, so a bit of a twist a number of citizens from countries not covered above do not need a visa, but need to apply for an entry certificate if staying for under six months.

So what do you need?

This is all new and can be confusing with so many variables, understanding what you need is essential for easy travel the best thing would be to visit the Governments website page on this.

What types of visas are there?

Travel visas tend to be single visit six months, so if you leave the UK in that time you will need to apply again, if you know you will be leaving in the six months and will need to return you can apply for a multi-entry visa.

You may not want a travel visa; you may be looking for more than a six months visa for

• Work
• Study
• Marriage (family reasons)
• And many more

These are all possible but you will have to fulfil criteria to be granted a longer term visa.

Applying for a Visa.

First and most important give yourself enough time, applying for a visa can take 8 weeks and if you need to appeal it will take longer.

Your first place to visit should be the UK government web site to find out what you need to apply for, once you know this and are happy, you can open an account and complete your application on-line, pay your fee and make an appointment with a visa application centre, if required.

If you are asked to attend a meeting make sure you take everything with you

• Travel documents including passports

• Acceptable photographs (this should be on you application and must follow strict guidelines on size and positioning within the photograph)

If your visa application requires other supporting documentation take as much evidence as you can.

- Financial evidence.
- Travel history.
- Information about your own residency.
- Details about work or education.
- Family evidence.
- Anything that you feel will support your application.

If you are applying for someone else you will need to prove that you can do so, normally this is via a birth certificate because they are a minor, but you may need to provide legal documents, if in doubt ask the centre you have your appointment with.
If you do not provide the required evidence your Visa may be declined and you will have to appeal or start again, and starting again with a decline already on your records will not be as easy.
